Stardust by Neil Gaiman

Reading Level: Adult
Submitted by Gerti

Stardust” is the third book by Neil Gaiman that I have recently read, and it bears a strong resemblance to the last book “Neverwhere” – as it also involves a world that is different from that in which we humans normally live. The book begins in the small British village of Wall, which necessarily has an enormous wall on one side of it, through which there is a passage with guards from the town stationed on either side of it. On the other side of this opening, one can see a meadow, and some trees in the distance, but the guards are ordered to keep residents and visitors to Wall from passing through it, due to the magical nature of what exists over there. However, once every 9 years, there a market in the meadow, and residents of town and beyond get together to meet and trade goods.

Teeing up the fairy tale, for that is what the story becomes, is Dunstan Thorn, a Wall resident who like every young man of a certain age is in love with a local girl. It is time for the market, however, and he goes through the gap in order to find a lovely little trinket for his sweetheart. Instead, he finds an old witch who owns a stand offering beautiful glass flowers which make an unearthly music. The old woman’s servant is a lovely young girl who is chained to the stand, but Dunstan still manages to buy a flower from her. However, when the girl kisses him he becomes enchanted, and returns to the fair late at night to make love to the slave girl. After the market, life goes back to normal in Wall, until a small baby appears on the village side of the gap one night. A name tag attached to him calls the baby Tristan Thorn, and Dunstan and his beloved village girl (who have gotten married by this point and had a baby of their own) take the child in.

Years pass, and Tristan falls in love with another gorgeous village girl, and promises to do anything if she’ll only kiss him. When the pair see a falling star, she asks him to get it for her, and he has to pass from the village into the meadow to do so. Then his adventures really begin, for he discovers that the fallen star is actually a living creature in fairy land, and that although he also has a chain to bind her, he let’s her go of his own free will. She runs away, but a tree tells him he must save her, for a pack of witches needs the star’s heart in order to bring back their youth. Fortunately, Tristan is such a good-natured creature, that everything in the forest is willing to help him, whether unicorn or dwarf, and he is able to save the star (whose name is Yvain) from imminent death. Of course, they fall in love, and the story has a few more twists and mysteries before Tristan can become the king he is destined to be with Yvain by his side. There is a secondary plot involving seven murderous uncles of his who also want to rule, but things turned out in the best possible way, as they do in any good fairy tale.

I love Gaiman’s imagination, and his sense of morality, which comes through loud and clear in this book, as the good guys always win, and even the bad guys often undergo a change of heart. A lovely story for a snowy afternoon.

Crimson Frost by Jennifer Estep

Reading Level: (Young Adult)
(4 out of 5)

I was so excited to find out that the library finally purchased this awesome series by Jennifer Estep.  The Mythos Academy series is full of Greek myth, romance, danger, action and humor.  Book one is Touch of Frost, book two is Kiss of Frost, book three is Dark Frost, and book four is Crimson Frost.  Book five Midnight Frost will be out in August.  I can't wait.  Just so you know all four books are only available at LCPL through e-book.  If you are a die hard print fan put in a purchase request!

Gwen Frost is a gypsy and she has the gift of being able to touch an object or a person and feel their emotions and see things.  After her mother dies she is enrolled in Mythos Academy a school of myths, magic and warrior whiz kids, where even the lowliest geek knows how to chop off somebody's head with a sword and Logan Quinn, the hottest Spartan guy in school, also happens to be the deadliest.

By book four Gwen has been in many battles, made many friends (Daphne, Carson, Kenzie, Oliver), and has finally snagged Logan the hottie Spartan.  I don't want to talk much about what happens because it will give away a lot of what goes on in the previous books and I want you to read them.  I think these books are great and I think you will too.  So check them out today!

The Diviners by Libba Bray

I recently saw a book trailer for The Diviners by Libba Bray. Most of the time I think the trailers are awful but this one actually made me want to read it.

Creepy right? I'm not one for scary books but I thought I would give it a try. I'm happy I did because it was a really great book.

The book is set in 1926, Evie O'Neill has just been sent to New York after a scandal arises in her Ohio hometown. Evie is estastic-shopping and parties-what's not to love? The only downside is she has to live with her uncle the who owns the Museum of American Folklore, Superstition, and the Occult or what it is called more often The Museum of Creepy Crawlies. Evie is having a fantastic time with her friends Mabel and Theta until her uncle is called to help with a murder of a young girl. As her uncle helps solve the case, he doesn't realize that Evie has a special power that may be the key to solving the murderer who is haunting New York City.
The book does have some scary moments for me but I don't really anything scary. The killer does sing the song from the trailer which gave me goosebumps. I bet the audio book would be great for people who like horror!

I can't decide if I like Evie or not. She definitely sticks up for herself and is the first to want to tackle the murders. There are many characters in the book-some with more minor roles but since this book is the first in a series I'm sure they will come up again in the books to come.

Don't be put off by the length of the book (it's nearly 600 pages) it was a quick read.

Now I can't wait for the second book to come out because from the conclusion of The Diviners it sounds great!

Some Girls Bite by Chloe Neill

Reading Level: Adult
(4 out of 5)

This series was recommended to me by a trusted library patron.  She hasn't steered me wrong yet.  But I did have to ask her whether or not the main character, Merit, and the main hot and delicious vampire, Ethan, were ever going to hook up.  Blasted she told me yes and no.  She wasn't going to give it up.  I'm just not sure I want to read several books where they are at arms length and never quite together because you know I have enough frustration in my life and I don't need that with a book series.  She said to calm down, and to read the books.  That I would like them.  I told you she hasn't steered me wrong.

I did like the first book.  It's nice reading about an area that you are familiar with.  This is the first book in the Chicagoland Vampires series.  Vampires have recently came out of the closet.  People really aren't happy with the fact that they are living amongst the undead but, hey what can you really do.  Merit is your average graduate student until she is attacked by a rogue vampire and left for dead.  That is when she is changed into a vampire by the uberly hot and frustratingly old fashioned Ethan.  He is rather old school wanting to be called Master and Liege.  Ethan is rather put off when Merit doesn't fall at his feet in gratitude for saving her life.  She didn't get a choice and she isn't really happy being fanged and having to drink blood.

It's hard enough trying to learn how to be a proper vampire when someone is still out to kill you.  And life gets really interesting when she finds out her Grandfather is the Ombud (Police for the supernatural), her best friend is a burgeoning sorceress, and she finds out she has some wicked cool powers.

The Peach Keeper by Sarah Addison Allen

The Peach Keeper is our book discussion book for February. I have to say I really enjoyed this book. I never know with the book discussion books. I try to pick books that sound interesting and that will hopefully appeal to the group. If anyone is interested in coming the meeting is February 21, 2012 at 10:30am. I will be making oatmeal cookies with coffee icing. The recipe is from the book and found on the authors website.

Walls of Water, North Caroline, where the secrets are thicker than the fog from the town's famous waterfalls, and the stuff of superstition is just as real as you want it to be.

Doesn't that just make you want to read more?

Willa Jackson is thirty years old and she hails from a fine old Southern family that met with financial ruin generations ago. The Blue Ridge Madam-built by Willa's great-great-grandfather during Walls of Water's heyday, and once the town's grandest home-has stood for years as a lonely monument to misfortune and scandal. Willa has long strived to build a life beyond the brooding Jackson family shadow, which is no easy task in a town shaped by years of tradition and the well marked boundaries between the haves and the have-nots.

Recently Willa has learned that an old classmate, socialite do-gooder Paxton Osgood, of the very prominent Osgood family, has restored the Blue Ridge Madam to her former glory, with plans to open a top-flight inn. Willa hopes that the troubled past can be laid to rest while something new and wonderful rises from the ashes but what rises instead is a skeleton buried beneath the property's lone peach tree. Once it is unearthed it raises a lot of questions for the Jackson's and the Osgood's. Because once upon a time Willa's and Paxton's grandmothers were best friends and they may know something about the buried bones, those of charismatic traveling salesman Tucker Devlin, who worked his dark charms seventy five years ago.

This throws Willa and Paxton into an unlikely friendship. Willa has a chance at love with Paxton's brother Colin. While Paxton has her own relationship woes with Sebastian. My favorite books have romance so I'm glad there were two love stories going on along with a mystery and a bit of magic. I think I'm going to be checking out Ms. Allen's other books. I'm intrigued.

Twisted by Gena Showalter

This is book three in the Intertwined series and the good news is that there will be a final book four. Bad news is that the release date is unknown. Another good piece of news is that there will be a spin off series about Riley's brothers Max and Nate. That is pretty great I think.

This book was crazy. Unraveled had left Aden dead and Victoria had brought him back to life as a vampire. Now Aden has a darkness in him that he's not sure he can control. Victoria is becoming more human, while Aden is become less. Aden takes to being vampire king quite nicely. Mary Ann ran away so she wouldn't hurt Riley but ends up doing so anyway. The ending is just insane. I don't really want to say more without giving any of the juicy details away. What I will say is that Ms. Showalter has her work cut out for her in book four because I want everything tied up in a nice bow. I don't think that is asking too much :).

Beautiful Chaos by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl

This is the third book in the Beautiful Creatures series and I have really enjoyed them all. I didn't devour this book as fast as the first two but I read it at a steady pace. Ethan and Lena have returned home but their previous actions had consequences and strange things have been happening. Swarm of locusts, record breaking heat, and devastating storms are only the tip of the iceberg. Someone needs to be sacrificed but who will it be.

If this was the last book in the series I was less than satisfied with the ending. When a series ends I like when everything is cleared up and I have an idea to what the future holds for my beloved characters. I guess I do know what the future holds but I didn't like it. I'm crossing my fingers that there will be another book but the authors website doesn't say.

Clarity by Kim Harrington

Clarity "Clare" Fern is a part of a supernatural family. She can see things when she touches objects, her brother can talk to spirits, and her mother is physic. It's a gift and a curse. The tourists love them but the townies think they are kookie. At the start of the summer a girl is murdered and she is asked to help solve the case by her ex-boyfriend, who she is still furious at for cheating on her. But when her brother becomes the prime suspect she can no longer say no to helping her ex or the new Detectives hot son Gabriel.

I liked this story. It was an easy read with mystery, romance, and supernatural elements rolled into one. I wonder if the the police would really let three teenagers do detective work but it's a story so I don't dwell too much on that stuff. The sequel Perception will be out March 1, 2012.

Silence by Becca Fitzpatrick

Reading Level: Young Adult
(3 out of 5)

Silence is the third book in the Hush, Hush saga. I was really excited to pick it up especially after how Crescendo ended. I actually started reading this in Walmart. I got worried rather quickly with the way the author started it out. If you haven't read Silence yet then you may not want to read any further. The book starts out with Nora waking up in a cemetery having amnesia. She finds out she has been missing for about four months. What really worried me was she didn't remember Patch. I'm a sucker for the romance in a book and when I've been following two characters for two books already I'm not pleased when they aren't together for most of the book. Especially when they were out of sorts in the last book. Wow I have used especially twice now. Anyhoo this book had to grow on me. It really is a good story I just didn't like that Nora and Patch had to get reacquainted. I feel like we had already been there done that. But that could just be me. There will be a fourth book. The author's website confirmed that.

The Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa

Reading Level: Young Adult
(4 out of 5)

These books have a lot going on but Ms. Kagawa is a great writer and she keeps you from getting confused. On Meghan Chase's sixteenth birthday her four year old brother Ethan is kidnapped by fairies and replaced by a changeling. Her whole world in a blink of an eye changes. Her best friend Robbie ends up being Robin Goodfellow as in Puck from A Midsummer's Night Dream. He is supposed to keep her blind to all things fairy but Meghan can't just let her brother stay in the Nevernever. Puck and Meghan embark on the Nevernever to find him. Pretty much from the moment Meghan steps in Nevernever things start to happen. She is hunted by the Winter Prince, almost eaten by a water horse, almost eaten by gremlins, almost eaten I think you get the drift. Then she finds out that she is the half daughter of the Summer King Oberon. Life gets even more complicated especially whens he finds herself falling for the youngest Prince of Winter, Ash. To complicate matters even more Puck is in love with her as well. And she's not sure how to feel about it. Don't even get me started on the Iron King. Just read the books. I'm looking forward to reading The Iron Queen and The Iron Knight.

Spellbound by Cara Lynn Schultz

Reading Level: Young Adult
(4 out of 5)

From the back cover: "What's a girl to do when meeting the one means she's cursed to die a horrible death?"

How can you not pick this book up and read it after that little teaser? At sixteen Emma Conner is starting her life over in New York. Up until then her life hasn't been easy. Her twin brother passed away when they were fourteen and her mother died a year later leaving her in the care of a drunken step father. When he almost kills her in a car accident that's when she decides to restart her life in New York with her Aunt Christine. While she is hoping this is the change she needs the posh Upper East Side prep school she has to attend isn't so welcoming. She has her younger cousin Ashley and new "witchy" friend Angelique to keep her company it's resident bad boy Brendan Salinger that she's irresistibly drawn to. Brendan with is rock star good looks and wealth may be her white knight but come to find out he is so much more.

When Brendan starts to turn cold towards her and unexplainable strange things start happening Emma finds out that the medallion she wears is part of a curse. Emma and Brendan have met before over and over in past lives. They meet, fall in love, and then she dies. But this time around Emma and Brendan are determined to break this curse.

I loved this book. It had some laugh out loud moments too. Which is always a plus. The sequel Spellcaster will be out next spring. I can't wait.

Bloodlines by Richelle Mead

Reading Level: Young Adult
(4 out of 5)

If you haven't read Ms. Mead's Vampire Academy series then please read them. You don't want to start Bloodlines without having read the VA series. I wouldn't say you would be lost but you would be feeling left out. Even having read the other books I was scratching my head a few times trying to place a few of the characters and other bits of information. But I was excited to be thrown back into this world and learn more about some of my favorite characters like Adrian and Sydney. You even see Rose a little bit in the beginning.

Sydney is an Alchemist. Alchemists are a group of humans that try and keep the vampires a secret from the rest of the human population. You first meet Sydney in the VA series when she is helping Rose. Later in that series she gets herself in hot water with the Alchemists when she helps Rose break out of jail and find Jill who is the half sister of Lissa the newly appointed Moroi Queen. In Bloodlines you find Sydney being awakened in the middle of the night. At first she thinks she is finally going to be punished and sent to a rehabilitation center for her part in helping Rose but that's not the case. She soon finds out that Jill has been attacked and they are sending her and few others to a boarding school in Palm Springs, California to put her in hiding and that Sydney will be her roommate. While Sydney's view of the vampires has changed a little since spending time with she doesn't want the Alchemist's to think she is sympathizing with them and now she has to live with one.

Spoilers Ahead Don't keep reading if you don't want to be spoiled!

Ms. Mead put some twists and turns into this novel. I didn't see the spirit bond with Jill and Adrian. I knew something more was going on with Lee. I just couldn't quite put my finger on it. I think it's sweet that Eddie has a crush on Jill. I wonder how that will play out in the rest of the series. I wonder who Ms. Mead has in store for Sydney. She needs a boy in her life. She needs a little fun in her life. The one thing I don't like about Sydney is she is so anal and rigid. She is so afraid of the unknown but it seems like her controlled world is going to be shook up. I think she will tap into some magic like her teacher suggested. I think there might be something between her and Adrian but both are pretty adamant about vampires and humans not dating so I'm not sure about that one. I can' wait for the next book it's coming out next May and is called, The Golden Lily. Ms. Mead you did not disappoint.

Shade and Shift by Jeri Smith-Ready

Reading Level: Young Adult
(4 out of 5)

Aura has something special planned for her boyfriend's birthday's but before she can give it to him he dies. He's gone, well sort of. Lie everyone born after the Shift, Aura can see and talk to ghosts. This mysterious ability had always been annoying, and Aura had wanted nothing more than to figure out why the Shift happened so she could undo it. But not with Logan's violet-hued spirit still hanging around. Dead Logan is almost as real as alive Logan used to be. Almost.

It doesn't help that Aura's new friend Zachary is so understanding and so very alive. His support means more to Aura than she cares to admit. As Aura's relationships with the dead and the living grow ever complicated, so do her feelings for Logan and Zachary. Each holds a piece of Aura's heart and clues to the secret of the Shift.

Reading Level: Young Adult
(4 out of 5)

Trying to move on after a loved one dies is hard enough but how do you move on when the one that died hasn't moved on. At the end of Shade Logan tries to move on and ends up becoming a Shade. A shade is a spirit that turns dark. Shift starts up with Aura trying to bring Logan back into being a spirit. Which she succeeds. Aura has to face facts. Logan is dead. It's hard having a ghost boyfriend. She's torn between moving on with Zachary and still helping Logan to move on from this world.

This was a great sequel. You learn a lot more to do with the Shift and Aura's mom. I had boy whiplash for a little while though when Dylan got thrown into the mix. I could actually see Aura with him. I'm very fickle at times. Zach shouldn't have went to prom with someone else. But I'm glad she got back on track with Zach.

The third book Shine comes out next May. I can't wait!

Storm Front by Jim Butcher

Reading Level: Adult
(4 out of 5)

My husband has been badgering me to read this series for months now. He listened to all but the last one on audio CD and loved them. He said that James Marsters rocked as the narrator for the first eleven books. The twelfth book will be read by the guy who played Lex Luther's dad on Smallville. I only know this because my husband tells me.

I dragged my feet not because I didn't think I would like Mr. Butcher's Dresden Files books but because I thought that I would. I didn't want to get sucked into another series. It's too late now. I have been sucked in. Even though I don't have to wait for book two to be published I have to wait for it to be returned to the library. I'm waiting eagerly. It gives my husband and I something to talk about.

I enjoyed the TV show but they are different. I think I like them equally. I like Bianca in the TV show better than I do in the book so far.

Anyway in Storm Front you meet Harry Dresden. He is a wizard. That is how he makes his living. He doesn't do parties but he will help you find your missing keys. He works with the police on occasion as a special consultant for the cases that are weird. You can't help but like Harry. He has a sense of humor. I like that in a man. Not ten pages into the story he gets called in to consult for a double homicide. Jennifer Stanton and Tommy Tomm's hearts exploded right out of their bodies. It takes a whole lot of dark magic to accomplish that. When Harry starts sticking his nose where it doesn't belong bad stuff starts happening to him. I think the the quote on the book explains it the best, "Magic and wizardry meet hard-boiled detective fiction...a whole lot of fun."-SF Site.

Raised by Wolves by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Reading Level: Young Adult
(4 out of 5)

At the age of four Bryn's world gets turned upside down. Her parents are attacked and killed by a rogue werewolf and her savoir Callum claims her for his own. So she is a human raised among wolves. For the past eleven years she has adhered to pack rules for the most part but once she finds out that Callum is hiding something from her she starts breaking the rules. The secret ends up being a teenage boy named Chase. He was attacked by a rogue and instead of dying he became a werewolf. From the moment Bryn meets Chase she feels a strong connection to him. Is Chase worth all the trouble she will be getting herself into if she pursues him? Oh I think he will be.

I read this book in two days. I started it at work on my lunch hour and then read it way way past my bed time that night. I finished it up the next day. I can't wait to read the next one. I'm not sure I can wait until Monday when it should arrive at the library for me. I'm so excited to see what happens next. It's called Trial by Fire.

Sweep Series by Cate Tiernan

Reading Level: Young Adult
(4 out of 5)

Morgan Rowlands is just a typical teenage girl until she meets Cal Blaire and finds out she is a blood witch. A blood witch is someone who is a descendant of one of the seven Wiccan clans. Her world is turned upside down, but not necessarily in a bad way. I am almost down with the third book and there are 15 total in the series. I am so excited because all 15 our published. Yeah!!!! At about 200 pages apiece these books are easy reads. I have been enjoying reading them.

Abandon by Meg Cabot

I'm so excited because this is my 200th post! Wow!

Reading Level: Young Adult
(4 out of 5)

Of course I have to pick the start of a trilogy out to read, when the rest of the trilogy isn't published yet. I think I told some one not too long ago I was done with series because they just leave me hanging, wanting more. But who am I kidding. I can't give up a good book, series or not. This was a really good book. This is a modern version of Hades and Persephone. Seventeen year old Pierce knows what it's like to die, because she's done it before. People think her being brought back was a miracle but Pierce knows the truth. Death wanted her to live with him forever but she ran. He wants her back. After moving back to the town her mom grew up in Pierce thinks she will have a fresh start, but she was wrong. He followed her there. Pierce is torn between wanting to be rid of him and wanting to get closer.

The second book which will probably come out next year and is titled Underworld. I can't wait.

The Gathering by Kelley Armstrong

Reading Level: Young Adult

(4 out of 5)

If you have read Ms. Armstrong's Darkest Powers trilogy you will want to read The Gathering. If you haven't read The Summoning, The Awakening, and The Reckoning I highly recommend that you do. All three were amazing. The Gathering starts a new series called Darkness Rising and is about another group of kids that the Edison group has put together.

Maya lives in Salmon Creek which is a small medical research town on Vancouver Island. The town is so small it's not on any maps, only has about two hundred residents, and the school houses sixty eight kids from kindergarten to twelfth grade. Strange things have been happening. First Maya's friend Serena, who was the captain of the swim team, drowns in the lake. Then a year later cougars start appearing around Maya and they won't go away. Her best friend Daniel has a hidden talent for "feeling" out people and situations. The sexy new boy Rafe makes Maya feel different. Combine that with a few unexplained deaths and a mystery involving Maya's biological parents and it's easy to suspect that this town might have more than it's share of skeletons in its closet.

I'm excited because on Ms. Armstrong's website it said that by the end of this trilogy we may see some of the characters from the Darkest Powers series. I'm ready for the next book but it won't be out until next year.
